grounded outer space people
music ensemble / artist residency
2021 – ongoing
Grounded Outer Space People is a nomadic ensemble exploring migration as an overarching methodology for the development and presentation of music.
G.O.S.P. operates as a trans-disciplinary platform and a process-oriented residency for artists. The artists with migration foreground are invited to develop new collaborations beyond their knowledge horizon and to share with intergenerational and intersectional audiences through music, performances, and installations. Initiated by Anton Kats the project draws on the artist’s experience of stranding in the asylum accommodation in Dessau after leaving his hometown Kherson, Ukraine in the early 2000s in order to not be drafted into the army.
Developed in solidarity and collaboration with artists impacted by forced migration the project takes and makes shelter in frameworks of cultural institutions, music festivals, museums and galleries. Taking over and establishing temporary headquarters on sites of cultural production, the ensemble rehearses, invokes and shares complex experiences of togetherness through music, while pragmatically looking for ways to structurally support the artists in the residency.
The vision of the project is to construct an accessible and unitive experience, in which diverse modalities of migration can be practically tested, documented, and presented through music.
